Our road to Brisbane

When my wife and I had our second daughter and began wanting to put down roots in the Bay Area, the first property we visited was in Brisbane. We were immediately enamored by the charming small-town atmosphere set against the stunning backdrop of San Bruno Mountain, and the thought of our little family flourishing in this safe, welcoming community filled us with great joy.

Since we arrived we’ve truly enjoyed getting to know new friends and neighbors, and our daughters have loved their time at our local schools making lifelong connections.

Early Life and Family

I grew up in California’s Central Valley where my mother served the community her entire career as a public-school teacher, and my grandfather served as teacher, School Principal, City Council member and Mayor of Rio Vista. I also heard stories of my other Grandfather’s run for congress when my Father was still a child, and the family lore of my Great Grandfather’s time as a US Congressman from California in the early 1890s. All of these examples shaped my early life and instilled in me a sense of the true value of service and the idea that everyone deserves representation. I also learned that democracy is not a spectator sport, and that if you want to make a difference, you have to have grit and determination to see it through.

When I was in high school I had the opportunity to study abroad with the American Field Service in Japan. This led me to study Japanese Language as an undergrad, and I ended up living in the country for a total of 9 years, meeting my future wife and falling in love, and receiving my Masters Degree in Design from the Tokyo University of the Arts. These experiences taught me the immense value of stepping outside my comfort zone, questioning my assumptions, and embracing divergent points of view and approaches to solving problems and living life.

An Effective Problem Solver for Brisbane

Anthony at work

I have been a small business owner since 2005, when I started my private freelance design practice Walker Design. Since moving to the Bay Area in 2015 I’ve also held design leadership roles at a variety of early-stage startups, primarily guiding product direction and brand identity for companies creating websites and apps.

But truly good design isn’t just about making things look pretty – its fundamentally about human centered problem-solving. Design thinking is about gaining a clear understanding of the problem at hand – and challenging your assumptions to make sure you’re solving the right problems – in order to test, gather feedback and assess effective solutions that will have a meaningful impact in peoples’ lives.

I will put these same problem solving skills to work for our community, effectively identifying and addressing our toughest issues. I will serve as your advocate and an effective problem solver for Brisbane.
